WASHINGTON, DC – Chairman Robert C. “Bobby” Scott (VA-03) released the following statement after the Biden Administration announced an extension in the pause of student loan repayment, collections, and interest accrual. “I applaud the Biden Administration’s decision to extend relief for student loan borrowers in response to the surge in COVID-19 infections. As we have seen during similar periods throughout pandemic, the rapid spread of the Omicron variant poses a significant risk to the financial health of workers and their families.

NEWPORT NEWS, VA –TOMORROW, December 21st, Congressman Bobby Scott (VA-03) will host a Telephone Town Hall on the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL) that was recently signed into law by President Biden. Congressman Scott will be joined by Virginia Deputy Secretary of Transportation John Lawson. This town hall be an opportunity for constituents to learn more about how the BIL is a historic investment in jobs and the economy, how it will benefit Hampton Roads and Virginia, and ask any questions they may have.

NEWPORT NEWS, VA – TOMORROW, December 17th, Congressman Bobby Scott (VA-03) will tour Hampton Roads Sanitation District’s (HRSD) SWIFT (Sustainable Water Initiative for Tomorrow) Research Facility in Suffolk. The SWIFT Program will help address nutrient pollution in the Chesapeake Bay, depletion of the Potomac aquifer, as well as land subsidence in Hampton Roads. Land subsidence makes Hampton Roads especially vulnerable to rising sea levels fueled by climate change. The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, recently signed into law by President Biden, makes significant investments in clean water, climate resilience, restoring the Chesapeake Bay, and remediating legacy pollution.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Last night, Congressman Bobby Scott (VA-03), the Chairman of the Committee on Education and Labor, was honored by the American Educational Research Association (AERA) with their Distinguished Public Service Award. According to AERA, this award is granted annually in recognition of someone who has worked to enact or implement policies that are well grounded in education research, or someone who has supported further education research. “I was honored to receive the Distinguished Public Service Award from AERA,” said Congressman Scott. “During my career in public service I have stressed the importance of creating policy based on evidence and research, and I have made that a core value of my tenure as Chairman of the Committee on Education and Labor

This legislation includes critical investments in shipbuilding which is a huge win for Hampton Roads. I am also encouraged by the bill’s inclusion of a well-deserved pay increase for our servicemembers as well as a guarantee of paid parental and bereavement leave.

WASHINGTON, DC – Chairman Robert C. “Bobby” Scott (VA-03) released the following statement after the Bureau of Labor Statistics announced that the economy added 210,000 jobs in November as the unemployment rate fell to 4.2 percent. Today’s jobs report demonstrates once again that America is on the move: 210,000 new jobs have been created, the unemployment rate is down, and two weeks ago, we saw the lowest level of initial jobless claims since October of 1969. President Biden has created more jobs in his first year in office than any other modern President during their first year. I applaud the Biden-Harris administration for its continued success in getting Americans back to work.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Bobby Scott (VA-03) sent a letter to U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland reiterating his earlier demand for a federal investigation into the police conduct and killing of Donovon Lynch. This letter follows the decision by the Virginia Beach Commonwealth’s Attorney’s announcement yesterday that the police officer responsible for fatally shooting Mr. Lynch would not face criminal charges. “The Commonwealth’s Attorney for Virginia Beach announced yesterday that he will not file criminal charges against the officer involved in the fatal shooting leaving many questions unanswered about what occurred that evening,” wrote Congressman Scott.
