WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Bobby Scott (VA-03) announced today that FEMA has begun accepting applications for funeral assistance for Virginians who have lost loved ones to COVID-19. The funeral assistance program is part of the American Rescue Plan that was passed by Congress and signed by President Biden earlier this year. “We have lost far too many people to the COVID-19 pandemic, and funeral costs far too often add tremendous mental and emotional stress to the grieving process,” said Congressman Scott.

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Education and Labor Committee Chairman Robert C. “Bobby” Scott (VA-03) delivered the following remarks on the House floor in support of H.R. 7, the Paycheck Fairness Act, which would strengthen the Equal Pay Act of 1963 and help end gender-based wage discrimination. “Mr. Speaker, I rise in support of H.R. 7, the Paycheck Fairness Act. When President Kennedy signed the Equal Pay Act in 1963, our country codified the basic idea that all workers should earn ‘equal pay for equal work regardless of sex.’ Regrettably, more than five decades later—and after the passage of the Lily Ledbetter Fair Act Pay—that promise remains unfulfilled.

Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU). “I was honored to receive the Lifetime Achievement Award from the L. Douglas Wilder School at VCU,” said Congressman Scott. “Many people often highlight that I was the first African-American to serve in Congress from the Commonwealth since Reconstruction, but I like to remind them that I achieved that on the day I was sworn in.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Yesterday, Congressman Bobby Scott (VA-03) sent a letter to U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland asking for a federal investigation into the police conduct and treatment of Donovon Lynch and Army Second Lieutenant Caron Nazario. On Tuesday, April 13th, Congressman Scott personally spoke with Attorney General Garland and was assured that the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) takes these matters seriously. DOJ usually does not publicly announce their intent to conduct an investigation. “The residents of Hampton Roads deserve transparency, accountability, and most of all, they deserve the truth about these incidents,” the Congressman wrote.

"I represent the 3rd congressional district of Virginia where the Chesapeake Bay meets the James, Nansemond, and Elizabeth Rivers, which presents both challenges and opportunities. My district is home to the Port of Virginia, one of the largest and busiest ports on the eastern seaboard. With 95 percent of our nation’s trade moving by water, it is essential that the port is able to maintain operations. The 3rd district is also home to multiple shipyards and neighbors Norfolk Naval Station, the largest naval base in the U.S.

WASHINGTON, DC – More than 75 House Democrats wrote in support of the Department of Labor’s proposals to withdraw two Trump-era rules that strip workers of critical protections from wage theft. The Independent Contractor Rule and the Joint Employment Rule would cost workers billions every year if they went into effect. The Independent Contractor Rule narrowed the Department’s interpretation of who is considered an employee under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA)- thereby narrowing who is eligible for certain protections, such as minimum wage and overtime. According to the Economic Policy Institute, the rule would rob workers of more than $3 billion every year.

NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Congressman Bobby Scott issued the following statement: “I was horrified when I viewed the recently released video footage of the police treatment of Caron Nazario, a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army. This should have been a routine traffic stop and the video speaks for itself. The release of this video also comes while the Hampton Roads community is still mourning the loss of Donovon Lynch who was killed by officers while their body worn cameras were not activated.
