WASHINGTON – Ranking Member Robert C. “Bobby” Scott (VA-03) released the following statement after the Bureau of Labor Statistics announced that the economy added 254,000 jobs in September, and the unemployment rate ticked down from 4.2 to 4.1 percent. Under the Biden-Harris Administration, 16.2 million jobs have been created, and workers have seen their hourly earnings grow by 18.1 percent on average. “Four years ago, the unemployment rate was 7.8 percent. Today, the unemployment rate is 4.1 percent. Four years ago, roughly 800,000 people filed initial unemployment insurance claims during the week.

WASHINGTON – Ranking Member Robert C. “Bobby” Scott (VA-03), House Committee on Education and the Workforce, released the following statement after International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) and the United States Maritime Alliance reached a tentative agreement to reopen the East Coast and Gulf ports. In sum, ILA workers will receive a 62 percent pay raise over six years.  “I am grateful that the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) and the United States Maritime Alliance (USMX) were able to reach an agreement and reopen the East Coast and Gulf ports.

WASHINGTON - Senators Tim Kaine and Mark Warner (Both D-VA) and Congressman Bobby Scott (VA-03) issued the following statement on the International Longshoremen's Association strike:  “The International Longshoremen’s Union and United States Maritime Alliance must reach a fair and equitable deal as soon as possible to ensure operations can continue at the Port of Virginia and other port facilities along the East and Gulf Coasts. We urge both sides to work in good faith towards a new contract, and we’ll continue to monitor this situation as it develops.”

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Bobby Scott (VA-03), the Ranking Member of the House Committee on Education and the Workforce, received the Legislative Champion Award from the Coalition on Adult Basic Education (COABE). Congressman Scott was selected by COABE due to his work to strengthen adult education and support adult learners, specifically his work to update the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA).

WASHINGTON – Ranking Member Robert C. “Bobby” Scott (VA-03) released the following statement after the Bureau of Labor Statistics announced that the economy added 142,000 jobs in August, and the unemployment rate ticked down from 4.3 to 4.2 percent. Four years ago, under the Trump Administration, the unemployment rate was double the current rate at 8.4 percent. This report also marks 43 consecutive months of job growth.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Bobby Scott (VA-03) announced $4,470,313 in grant funding for the City of Chesapeake to hire more firefighters. This funding was awarded through the Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) program, a grant program through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to provide funding directly to fire departments and volunteer firefighter interest organizations to help them increase or maintain the number of trained, front line firefighters available in their communities.
