WASHINGTON, DC - On Saturday, the New Kent County, Virginia Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) awarded Congressman Robert C. "Bobby" Scott (D-VA-3) with the Congressman of the Century Award. According to the New Kent NAACP, the award was given to Rep. Scott "As Congressman Of The Century For Your Contribution To Equality And Justice For All Americans."

WASHINGTON, DC - Today, the House Judiciary Committee held a markup of H.R. 1064, the Youth Prison Reduction through Opportunities, Mentoring, Intervention, Support, and Education Act, referred to as the Youth PROMISE Act. The Committee voted to report the bill favorably to the whole House of Representatives by a vote of 17-14.

WASHINGTON, DC - Today, Congressman Bobby Scott (VA-3) attended the groundbreaking of the new Simonsdale Elementary School in Portsmouth. Simonsdale Elementary has been serving the Simonsdale community since it first opened in 1946, and today it educates approximately 315 students from pre-Kindergarten through sixth grade.

WASHINGTON, DC - Congressman Robert C. "Bobby" Scott (D-VA-03) will host U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan for a visit to An Achievable Dream (AAD), a Newport News public school, on Friday, November 20, 2009. Secretary Duncan and Rep. Scott will begin with a tour of AAD's elementary school, where they will observe students and teachers in various classrooms. Following the tour, Secretary Duncan and Rep. Scott will hold a roundtable discussion at AAD's middle and high school, where they will discuss ways to improve No Child Left Behind and promote dropout prevention with educators, students and parents.

WASHINGTON, DC - Today, the House of Representatives passed H.R. 3962, the Affordable Health Care for America Act, by a vote of 220-215 (Roll Call No. 887). The legislation will lower health care costs, provide access to care for 36 million Americans, and provide a public option for consumers to help encourage competition among insurers and drive health costs down.

Several leading criminal justice experts including Barry Krisberg, President of the National Council on Crime and Delinquency, Marc Mauer, Executive Director of The Sentencing Project and Wayne McKenzie, Director of the Prosecution and Racial Justice Program at the Vera Institute of Justice testified about the on-going racial disparities that exist in the justice system.
