Scott Votes to Prevent Musk-Trump-MAGA Government Shutdown
WASHINGTON, D.C. –Congressman Bobby Scott (VA-03) issued the following statement:
“I voted to prevent a costly Musk-Trump-MAGA shutdown that would have damaged our economy and furloughed thousands of workers in Hampton Roads right before the holidays. The bill we voted on today contains investments in community health centers and shipbuilding, including a pay raise for shipyard workers building nuclear submarines. The bill also includes critically needed disaster relief for Virginia and other states that were devasted by hurricanes this past year, and support for farmers.
“It is regrettable that Speaker Johnson and extreme MAGA Republicans suddenly rejected our original agreement that included many bipartisan and uncontroversial measures. This included investments in research to combat childhood cancer as well as reauthorization of the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act and the Older Americans Act. Our original bipartisan agreement would have strengthened workforce development to benefit workers, employers, and the economy, and it would have helped millions of older Americans live independently and with dignity. Insofar as there was no legitimate opposition to these bills, this has just caused an unnecessary delay in their enactment.
“It will be incumbent on Congressional Republicans and the incoming Trump-Vance Administration to work with Congressional Democrats to pass those bipartisan initiatives in the coming months and fully fund the government for FY 2025 in a way that will invest in students, workers, families and our national security.”
