Scott Urges Passage of Bipartisan Government Funding Agreement
WASHINGTON, D.C. –Congressman Bobby Scott (VA-03), the Ranking Member of the House Committee on Education and the Workforce, issued the following statement:
“Congressional Democrats and Republicans worked together for weeks to craft a government funding bill that would provide long overdue hurricane and disaster relief to Virginia and other states. It would also make important investments in shipbuilding, increase funding for community health centers and take action to lower the cost of prescription drugs.
“At the last minute, Speaker Johnson and extreme MAGA Republicans suddenly rejected our bipartisan agreement, which included a reauthorization of the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Actand the Older Americans Act. Our agreement would have strengthened workforce development to benefit workers, employers, and the economy, and it would have helped millions of older Americans live independently and with dignity.
“They stripped our bipartisan deal of many of those necessary provisions and suddenly included a two-year extension of the debt ceiling. This extension will simplify the process for them to give tax handouts to the ultra-wealthy and corporations, and cut Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid, while significantly increasing the national debt. Instead of the chaos caused by Elon Musk, Donald Trump and Speaker Johnson, we should pass the original bipartisan agreement for the good of the American people.”
