Scott Statement on Introduction of the Voting Rights Amendment Act of 2014

January 16, 2014

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Representatives Jim Sensenbrenner (WI-02), John Conyers (MI-13), John Lewis (GA-05), Robert C. "Bobby" Scott (VA-03), Steve Chabot (OH-01), Shelia Jackson-Lee (TX-18), Spencer Bachus (AL-06), Steny Hoyer (MD-05), and Sean Duffy (WI-07) introduced the Voting Rights Amendment Act of 2014 (H.R. 3899). The legislation updates the Voting Rights Act in response to the U.S. Supreme Court's 2013 decision in Shelby County v. Holder.

"The Voting Rights Amendment Act of 2014 was introduced in response to the Supreme Court's decision in Shelby County v. Holder, which struck down a significant part of the Voting Rights Act," said Rep. Scott. "Since this decision, I have worked closely with my colleagues in a bipartisan way to ensure that voting rights are adequately protected in the wake of the Supreme Court's decision."
