Scott to Meet with President on Efforts to Reduce Gun Violence

January 3, 2016

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Tomorrow, Congressman Robert C. "Bobby" Scott (VA-03) will join other members of the House Democratic Gun Violence Prevention Task Force for a meeting with the President at the White House to discuss the Administration's plans to reduce gun violence. Congressman Scott, a vice chair of the House Democratic Gun Violence Prevention Task Force, issued the following statement ahead of Monday afternoon's meeting with the President:

"Washington has a moral obligation to do something to address our nation's gun violence epidemic. With the current leadership in Congress paralyzed to even consider bipartisan, evidence-based legislation to curb gun violence and close loopholes in the law, I am interested in learning more about the President's proposed executive actions to address this issue and offering my own suggestions.

"The most effective way to address this epidemic is through comprehensive, evidence-based policy proposals that will help keep our communities safe from gun violence. The House Democratic Gun Violence Prevention Task Force, of which I serve as a vice chair, has put forward several proposals that would go a long way in achieving these goals. These proposals include reinstating and strengthening the assault weapons ban, reducing the size of magazines, implementing universal background checks, cracking down on illegal-gun trafficking and straw-purchasing, improving our mental-health system, and implementing comprehensive, community based violence prevention and intervention programs.

"I expect the President's proposals will include some of these ideas, but long-term reform to address this epidemic can only be achieved through congressional action. I commend the President for leading on this issue and I look forward to learning more about his proposals."
