Scott to Host Community Forum on Sequestration in Newport News

February 15, 2013

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Robert C. "Bobby" Scott (VA-03) announced today that he will host a community forum on the economic impacts of sequestration on Tuesday, February 19, 2013 in Newport News, Virginia. Joining Congressman Scott at the community forum will be Dr. Vinod Agarwal, Professor of Economics and Director of the Economic Forecasting Project at Old Dominion University.

"Unless Congress acts, sequestration is scheduled to be implemented on Friday, March 1, 2013," said Rep. Scott. "These automatic, indiscriminate across-the-board spending cuts, included in the 2011 agreement to raise the debt ceiling, will have a significant impact on our local economy. Over the last year, I have heard from many of my constituents about how these unnecessary cuts will negatively impact their businesses. I share their concerns and I have urged my colleagues in Congress to make canceling sequestration our top priority. I remain optimistic that the sequester will be delayed again, but with only a few legislative days left before March 1st, I believe it is important to hold this community forum to help explain the impact sequestration will have on the federal budget, our economy, and my constituents."

The community forum will be held from 6:00 P.M. to 7:30 P.M. on Tuesday, February 19, 2013 at An Achievable Dream Middle and High School, located at 5720 Marshall Avenue, Newport News, Virginia 23605. This event is open to the public.
