Virginia’s Third Congressional District Receives Federal Funding for Critical Transportation Projects
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the U.S. Department of Transportation announced awards for the Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery, or TIGER, Discretionary Grant program. Two critical transportation projects in Virginia's Third Congressional District were awarded a combined $39.9 million in federal funding through the TIGER program.
The Virginia Port Authority's Norfolk International Terminal Intermodal Gate Complex and I-564 Connector project in Norfolk received $15 million in TIGER funding. This project will significantly improve access to one of the nation's busiest ports and alleviate congestion on Hampton and Terminal Boulevards in Norfolk.
The Greater Richmond Transit Company's Broad Street Bus Rapid Transit Project in Richmond received $24.9 million in TIGER funding. This project will connect Main Street Station and the East End of Richmond to the Willow Lawn section of Henrico County. By improving transit options, this project will connect tens of thousands of Virginians to employment centers in the Richmond area.
"I am very pleased that the U.S. Department of Transportation has awarded TIGER grants to GRTC and the Virginia Port Authority for two much needed projects," stated Congressman Bobby Scott. "Robust and sustained transportation investments are critical for our nation's long term economic competitiveness. These federal funds will help move these projects forward expeditiously and will greatly improve transportation outcomes for two important regions in our Commonwealth."
