Scott Votes to Protect Right to Contraception
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Bobby Scott (VA-03), issued the following statement after the U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 8373, the Right to Contraception Act:
"The U.S. Supreme Court's decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization upended 50 years of legal precedent and rolled back the rights of women all over the country. Justice Thomas released a concurring opinion in the Dobbs decision where he made clear that other basic freedoms such as the right to same-sex marriage and the right to use contraception should also be revisited by the Court. That is why the House recently passed the Women's Health Protection Act, the Ensuring Women's Right to Reproductive Freedom Act and the Respect for Marriage Act. I voted for all those bills to defend women's right to make their own decisions about their health care and to defend freedom, privacy and equality. Today, I continued that record and voted to pass the Right to Contraception Act, which establishes a statutory right to contraception, and ensures that health care providers can provide contraceptives and other related information.
"As Republican legislators across the nation are attacking basic freedoms, we must fight to protect the right to contraception and enshrine this right in federal law. The Right to Contraception Act ensures that neither states nor a future hostile Republican administration can limit this critical right to privacy and bodily autonomy. Contraception is fundamental to the health and freedom of all people, and I will continue to be a strong defender of women's reproductive health freedom."
