Scott Votes to Keep Government Open
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Bobby Scott (VA-03) issued the following statement:
“The most basic responsibility of Congress is to fund the government. Speaker McCarthy and the extreme MAGA Republicans unnecessarily took us to the brink of a government shutdown that would have hurt the economy, especially in Hampton Roads. This bill could have been passed weeks ago without all of the drama. While the continuing resolution passed today was imperfect, it will keep the federal government open for the next 45 days and fund all government agencies essentially at current levels. It also included critical disaster aid relief and extended authorities for the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Flood Insurance Program. However, I am disappointed it did not include aid for our allies in Ukraine, despite overwhelming support in both chambers of Congress. It is my understanding that the Department of Defense will continue supporting Ukraine with current funding. It is time for Speaker McCarthy and MAGA Republicans to honor the funding agreements they made with President Biden earlier this year and work on passing bipartisan appropriations bills to fund the government in a way that will invest in our economy, American families and our national security.”
