Scott Votes to Defend Reproductive Health Freedom

July 15, 2022

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Bobby Scott (VA-03) issued the following statement after the U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 8296, the Women's Health Protection Act, and H.R. 8297, the Ensuring Women's Right to Reproductive Freedom Act:

"With its ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization, the Supreme Court erased nearly 50 years of legal precedent and fulfilled the Republican Party's longtime goal of destroying reproductive health freedoms, and now they are engaged in a nationwide campaign to criminalize women's reproductive health decisions. I voted to defend freedom and women's right to make decisions about their health care.

"Today, I joined my Democratic colleagues to again pass the Women's Health Protection Act to enshrine the protections of Roe v. Wade into federal law. Previously passed by the House last year, this legislation has been updated to address the Dobbs ruling. The Women's Health Protection Act will restore the right to an abortion nationwide – upholding all Americans' freedom to make their own health care decisions as well as providers' freedom to provide abortion care. I also voted for the Ensuring Women's Right to Reproductive Freedom Act to address Republicans' attempts to restrict Americans' freedom of movement and make it illegal for states to impede an individual from crossing state lines to obtain an abortion legal in another state. I will continue to be a strong defender of reproductive health freedom and will continue to defend women's privacy rights from these continued attacks."
