Scott Statement on President's State of the Union Address

January 28, 2014

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Robert C. "Bobby" Scott (VA-03) issued the following statement on President Barack Obama's State of the Union Address to a joint session of Congress:

"Tonight, the President charged Congress to refocus our attention on the everyday economic concerns of middle-class Americans. It has been five years since the Democratic Congress worked with this President in passing the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, which laid the groundwork for our economic recovery. Since then, our economy has been growing steadily, adding jobs in the private sector for 46 consecutive months. But as the President pointed out tonight, more needs to be done because too many Americans are not feeling the benefits of the recovery.

"Congress must do more to expand economic opportunity. Extending emergency unemployment insurance and raising the federal minimum wage are two things that we could do immediately to help hardworking American families. This can be a year of action if we decide to work together. The President outlined an agenda tonight that, if acted upon, can expand economic opportunity for millions of Americans."
