Scott Statement on the Passing of Virginia Supreme Court Justice Leroy Hassell

February 9, 2011

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Robert C. "Bobby" Scott (VA-03) issued the following statement on the passing of Virginia Supreme Court Justice Leroy Hassell:

"It was with great sadness that I learned of Virginia Supreme Court Justice Leroy Hassell's passing.  I was a member of the Virginia Senate when he was appointed to the Virginia Supreme Court by then-Governor Gerald Baliles and had the privilege of supporting his election by the General Assembly in 1990.  A Norfolk native who went on to attend Harvard Law, Justice Hassell became Virginia's first Black chief justice in 2003.  With this loss, there will be a significant void to fill on the Virginia Supreme Court.  My thoughts and prayers go out to the Hassell family and his colleagues on the Court."
