Scott Statement on the Passing of George E. Curry

August 22, 2016

NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Congressman Bobby Scott (VA-03) issued the following statement on the passing of George E. Curry:

“I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of George E. Curry. As a prominent, award-winning journalist, George was an influential voice on civil rights and race relations in newspapers all across the country. He was well respected for his role in diversifying the newsroom and served as an inspiration to young African-American journalist throughout his tenure. George possessed the ability to meticulously document and analyze the stories of African-Americans in order to present a complete picture of America.

“His reporting in Emerge magazine was critical in bringing awareness to the unconscionable incarceration of Kemba Smith, which assisted in my and others efforts in successfully petitioning President Clinton to commute her sentence. George was a prime example of how the power of the press can be used for the greater good. My thoughts and prayers are with the Curry family and the many people positively impacted by his work.”
