Scott Statement on Passage of Fifth GOP Continuing Resolution

February 6, 2018

WASHINGTON, DCCongressman Bobby Scott (VA-03) issued the following statement after voting against the House Republicans' latest short-term Continuing Resolution (CR) to fund the government:

"Today's vote was for the fifth Continuing Resolution (CR) since September. We should have already begun working on the budget for next year. Instead we are still debating a budget that should have been finalized five months ago. The Republican Majority spent last fall obsessing over tax cuts for billionaires and corporations and forgot about the basics of governing.

"CRs are an incredibly ineffective way to govern. They hamstring federal agencies and freeze their ability to act effectively. Additionally, due to operating under continued uncertainty as a result of CRs, federal agencies waste billions of dollars planning on different budget scenarios, including preparing for government shutdowns. The American people are the ones who pay the price for this dysfunction. It is time for the Republican Majority to reach across the aisle to Democrats, so that we can work together on a long-term budget agreement that actually funds the federal government for the remainder of fiscal year 2018 and addresses sequestration, disaster relief, the opioid epidemic, and DREAMers."
