Scott Statement on Mayport Decision

February 13, 2012

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Robert C. "Bobby" Scott issued the following statement on the Defense Department's decision to withdraw its proposal to move a nuclear aircraft carrier from Naval Station Norfolk, Virginia to Naval Station Mayport, Florida:

"I am pleased that the Department of Defense has finally heeded the advice of the Hampton Roads Congressional Delegation with regards to having a redundant East Coast homeport for nuclear aircraft carriers. At a time when the Department of Defense is facing tough fiscal constraints, spending upwards to $1 billion for a redundant homeport would not be a prudent use of taxpayer funds. Today's announcement is a tremendous victory both for sound fiscal planning and especially the citizens of Hampton Roads."
