Scott to Run for Ranking Member of the Committee on Education and the Workforce

November 10, 2014

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Robert C. "Bobby" Scott (VA-3) officially announced that he will run for Ranking Member of the Committee on Education and the Workforce. If elected by his House Democratic colleagues, Congressman Scott would succeed his friend and retiring Ranking Member and former Chairman, Congressman George Miller of California. The Committee on Education and the Workforce has jurisdiction over America's federal education and workforce programs, from early childhood learning through secondary and higher education and from job training through retirement.

Below is the full text of Congressman Scott's letter to his House Democratic colleagues.

Dear Colleague:

Congratulations on your election to the 114th Congress! As our Democratic Caucus prepares for the work ahead, I write to ask for your support to become the Ranking Member of the Committee on Education and the Workforce in the 114th Congress.

Our outgoing Ranking Member and former Chairman George Miller has been a staunch advocate for our nation's students and workers. Under George's leadership, we accomplished many great things, such as protecting students from a hike in student loan interest rates, expanding access to affordable health care to millions of Americans, and raising the minimum wage in 2007 for the first time in a decade. In the next Congress, we will need a strong and experienced voice advocating for our principles and values. And we have serious issues to tackle – long overdue reauthorizations of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act and the Higher Education Act, addressing student debt, closing the achievement gap, dismantling the School-to-Prison Pipeline, giving America's workers a long overdue raise, ensuring retirement security for our seniors, protecting workers' rights, and guaranteeing affordable health care for all Americans.

I have served my entire 22-year career in Congress on the Committee on Education and the Workforce fighting for America's students and workers. I humbly ask for your support to lead Democrats on this important Committee in the 114th Congress.

Very truly yours,

ROBERT C. "BOBBY" SCOTT
Member of Congress
