WASHINGTON, D.C. – Earlier today, Congressman Bobby Scott (VA-03) received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 14th Excellence in Virginia Government Awards hosted by the L. Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs(link is external) at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU).

"I was honored to receive the Lifetime Achievement Award from the L. Douglas Wilder School at VCU," said Congressman Scott. "Many people often highlight that I was the first African-American to serve in Congress from the Commonwealth since Reconstruction, but I like to remind them that I achieved that on the day I was sworn in. I hope people will remember all that we have achieved for Virginians and Americans during my time in office. I currently have the honor to serve as the Chairman of the Committee on Education and Labor, and I am proud of the work we have done already on advancing equity in education, protecting and expanding access to affordable health care, ensuring workers have a safe workplace where they can earn a living wage free from discrimination, and pushing for criminal justice reform. My work is far from over. Thank you again for this tremendous honor."

According to the Wilder School, the Excellence in Virginia Awards celebrate Virginians who have made noteworthy contributions to the practice of government and the welfare of Virginia's communities and citizens. The Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes an individual Virginian whose career represents the highest values of public service and citizenship and who has made a substantial contribution to the good of the commonwealth.
