Scott Receives 2013 Sankofa Award at Annual National Bar Association Convention

August 1, 2013

WASHINGTON, DC – Earlier this week, Congressman Robert C. "Bobby" Scott (VA-03) received the 2013 Sankofa Award at the annual convention of the National Bar Association (NBA) in Miami, Florida.

The Sankofa award was established in 2005 and is presented to an individual who has distinguished him or herself by empowering the futures of young people by his or her tireless efforts to make a quality education accessible to all. The Award is presented on behalf of the President of the NBA and the Chairperson of the NBA's Awards Committee. It represents the old African adage "Always remember the past for therein lies the future."

"I am honored to receive the 2013 Sankofa award at this year's National Bar Association convention," stated Rep. Scott. "The National Bar Association is our nation's oldest and largest association of African American lawyers and judges. This organization has been at the forefront of improving our nation's justice system and ensuring that more minorities are represented in the legal profession. To be recognized by such an esteemed organization for my efforts in Congress to improve access to a quality education is truly an honor."
