Scott Commends President's Summer Jobs+ Initiative

January 5, 2012

WASHINGTON, DC – Although the House of Representatives remains out of session, Congressman Bobby Scott (D-VA) returned to Washington to work and discuss solutions to create and grow jobs with his House Democratic colleagues and leaders at the White House. This morning, the Congressman attended a White House panel discussion on the President's Summer Jobs+ Initiative, a new call to action for businesses, non-profits, and government to work together to provide pathways to employment for low-income and disconnected youth in the summer of 2012.

"I commend the President for launching this new collaborative effort to get businesses, non-profits and government agencies focused on providing summer job and internship opportunities to low-income and disconnected youth," said Rep. Scott. "As confirmed by several young people who spoke at today's event, these opportunities can and do make a tremendous difference in the lives of young people. A summer job or internship can push a young person towards college or towards the workplace and give them the encouragement they need to succeed. While I continue to be disappointed in the leadership of the House of Representatives for failing to act on major components of the President's American Jobs Act, I am pleased to see President Obama taking action without waiting for Congress."

Businesses, non-profits, government agencies and young people can get connected with the Summer Jobs+ initiative online at www.dol.gov/summerjobs/.
