Scott Celebrates Nearly $1M from Department of Education for Norfolk Public Schools To Address Community Violence, Improve Student Mental Health

January 11, 2024

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Bobby Scott, the Ranking Member of the House Committee on Education and the Workforce, celebrated the U.S. Department of Education (ED) announcement that Norfolk Public Schools will receive $949,264 as part of the Project Prevent grant program. This funding was made possible by the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, which Congressman Scott supported and President Joe Biden signed into law in 2022.

“Children deserve to live and learn without the fear of violence,” said Congressman Scott. “The Bipartisan Safer Communities Act was the first federal gun safety law enacted in almost three decades, and I am proud to have supported it. This funding will help reduce violence in our communities, provide resources to create safe learning environments and help address students’ mental health needs.”

The Project Prevent program provides grants to local educational agencies (LEAs) to implement community- and school-based strategies to help prevent community violence and mitigate the impacts of exposure to community violence. The grant for Norfolk Public Schools is part of ED announcing a total of $6 million in Project Prevent grants for school districts across the nation.
