Scott Announces Nearly Three Million Virginians Have Gained Access to Free Preventive Care Due to the Affordable Care Act
WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman Robert C. "Bobby" Scott (VA-03) announced that nearly three million Virginians have gained access to free preventive care, such as recommended cancer screenings and immunizations, because of the Affordable Care Act. The number includes both individuals with private insurance and seniors enrolled in Medicare.
"I am pleased to announce that nearly three million Virginians have already received expanded coverage for preventive services under the Affordable Care Act," said Rep. Scott. "We all know the importance of receiving preventive care and the Affordable Care Act has made great strides in increasing access to essential preventive medicine. Access to prevention means that families can get the care they need early on, decreasing the risk that they might develop a more serious and more expensive medical condition. For example, when breast cancer is detected early, the five-year relative survival rate is 98%, but declines to 23% when cancer has spread to other parts of the body. And unfortunately, before the Affordable Care Act, too many Americans put off their checkups or screenings because they could not afford the co-pays or deductibles. No one should ever have to forego a life-saving screening because he or she lacks the money or the insurance. And now, thankfully, the Affordable Care Act has ensured that all Americans have full access to preventive care."
