October 29, 2009

WASHINGTON, DC - Representative Robert C. "Bobby" Scott (D-VA-03) issued the following statement on Interior Secretary Ken Salazar's announcement of approving the construction of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial on the National Mall:

"I am very pleased with Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar's announcement approving the construction of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial on the National Mall today.   This marks a giant step in erecting a lasting monument for Dr. King on the National Mall.  It is my hope that this monument will be a site for generations of visitors from around the world to come to Washington and celebrate the achievement of civil rights through nonviolent means. The building of this memorial has been a long time coming and it will be a historic day when construction is complete.  I want to congratulate Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity for its leadership in the construction of this monument."
