04.30.09 | Scott Urges Senate Action on the CAMPUS Safety Act

April 30, 2009

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman Robert C. "Bobby" Scott issued the following statement regarding the April 26, 2009 shooting at Hampton University:

"I was saddened to hear about the recent shooting at Hampton University.  I would like to extend my deepest sympathies to the victims and their families.  This incident is a clear indicator of the need for an information source campuses can access to learn best practices and techniques to keep our campuses safe and how to respond in the event of a campus emergency."

"In the wake of the tragedies of Virginia Tech and Northern Illinois University, I, along with Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX), introduced H.R. 748 the CAMPUS Safety Act of 2009, to create a National Center for Campus Public Safety.  The Center will train campus public safety agencies, encourage research to strengthen safety and security, and serve as a clearinghouse for the dissemination of relevant campus public safety information.  This bill has already passed the House of Representatives and I strongly urge my Senate colleagues to quickly consider the CAMPUS Safety Act.  This bill is supported by the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators. "

Rep. Scott is the Chairman of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism and Homeland Security and also sits on the House Education and Labor Committee. Rep. Gohmert is the Ranking Member of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, and Homeland Security.
