01.13.09 | Scott Statement on Navy's Decision to Homeport a Nuclear-Powered Aircraft Carrier at Naval Station Mayport, Florida
January 14, 2009
WASHINGTON, DC - Congressman Robert C. "Bobby" Scott (D-VA-03) issued the following statement regarding the United States Navy's Record of Decision to Homeport a Nuclear-Powered Aircraft Carrier at Naval Station Mayport, Florida:
"The Navy's decision makes no sense. The cost of this relocation is estimated to fall somewhere in the range of $600 million to $1 billion. The Federal budget faces an estimated $1.2 trillion deficit for Fiscal Year 2009 even before Congress enacts President-elect Obama's Economic Recovery Package. This is not a wise investment on the part of the Navy. Naval Station Norfolk has been the East Coast home to Nuclear-Powered Aircraft Carriers for over 45 years. The Navy did not see this relocation as necessary during the height of the Cold War and there is no strategic advantage to this relocation today. I look forward to working with the entire Virginia Congressional Delegation and the new Administration to resolve this issue."
