WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Robert C. "Bobby" Scott issued the following statement on Virginia's diminished Congressional seniority in the 114th Congress: "With the loss of Frank Wolf, Jim Moran, and now Eric Cantor, the Commonwealth's influence in Congress will be greatly diminished when the 114th Congress convenes next January. I have always enjoyed working with Congressmen Wolf, Moran and Cantor on issues important to Virginia and I look forward to continuing this work for the remainder of this Congress.

Mr. Speaker, I rise today to honor the life and legacy of Raymond H. Boone, Sr., who passed away on June 3, 2014. Ray devoted his entire life to fighting for justice and equality, becoming one of the most trusted voices in news in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Born in Suffolk, Virginia, Ray earned a bachelor's degree in journalism from Boston University and a master's degree in political science from Howard University. Ray's first foray into the newspaper business was as a reporter for the Quincy, Massachusetts Patriot-Ledger and later he worked for the Suffolk, Virginia News-Herald. He also worked as a reporter for the Norfolk, Virginia Journal and Guide. He eventually made his way to Richmond, where he became the editor of the Richmond Afro-American Planet, a position he held for 15 years.

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) – Congressman Bobby Scott helped renovate a house Saturday for Habitat For Humanity. Congressman Scott and his staff members helped with the project on Bold Street in Portsmouth. Habitat For Humanity South Hampton Roads recently shifted from building new homes to rehab projects. The upcoming projects support the organization’s Rebuilding The American Dream Initiative.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) – Congressman Bobby Scott put on held a forum for frustrated residents in Newport News Thursday night. The town hall meeting was about gang violence prevention. People packed An Achievable Dream Middle and High School to be a part of it. They wasted no time venting their frustrations to the audience and their representative, who was in town from Washington.

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Robert C. "Bobby" Scott issued the following statement in reaction to the interim reported released Wednesday by the Inspector General for the Department of Veterans Affairs: "At this time, I am not calling on the Secretary to resign. The Inspector General's interim report conspicuously does not recommend personnel changes at this time. Further, I believe a power vacuum at the top of the V.A. may further exacerbate the current problem, because there is no telling how long it will take the President to nominate and the Senate to confirm a replacement who will then take months to familiarize him or herself with V.A. leadership.

Mr. Speaker, I join the author of the bill, the gentleman from Wisconsin and chair of the Judiciary Committee's Subcommittee on Crime, Mr. Sensenbrenner; my colleague from Virginia, the chair of the full committee, Mr. Goodlatte; the gentleman from Michigan and ranking member, Mr. Conyers; Mr. Nadler; and my colleague from Virginia (Mr. Forbes) for proposing this amended version of the USA FREEDOM Act. I commend my colleagues for working together to develop a bipartisan approach to addressing some of the shortcomings in our foreign intelligence surveillance statutes.
