NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Congressman Bobby Scott (VA-03), the chairman of the House Committee on Education and Labor, applauded the U.S. Department of Labor’s (DOL) announcement that Virginia’s community college system will receive $3.3 million in grant funding to support workers displaced by the COVID-19 pandemic. The funding comes from the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act, which Congress passed on March 27. It provides states a total of $345 million in Dislocated Worker Grants to workers develop new skills and connect with hiring employers.

Virginia Congressman Bobby Scott, a Democrat from the 3rd District representing the Newport News and Norfolk area, has introduced legislation that would have the federal government pay 100% of COBRA costs during the pandemic.

The funding comes from the Governor’s Emergency Education Relief (GEER) Fund, which allocates nearly $3 billion for governors to use at their discretion to support their state’s K-12 and higher education needs related to COVID-19.

COBRA allows laid-off workers to keep buying into their health insurance plans.
