And I want to commend the Newport News Police Department for their response. While the news crews will eventually leave the scene, many of the students and faculty will carry this event with them for the rest of their lives. Today, we are marking up the Education and Labor Committee’s portion of the Build Back Better Act, which makes historic and long-overdue investments in students, workers, families, and our economy.
As rumblings of unease over President Biden’s $3.5 trillion infrastructure bill emerge from the Senate, Rep. Robert C. “Bobby” Scott says he’s gearing up to fight for its child care and workforce development programs — as well as a critical bricks-and-mortar need. That bricks and mortar need is school buildings. And coming from a state where the median age of schools is 50 years, well above the national average, it’s a big concern for Scott, D-Newport News who chairs of the House Education and Labor Committee. “If we had $100 billion, that might replace maybe 2% of the nation’s schools,” he said. “And I have to caution, I don’t think we can get that, but I’m working hard for this.”

It is critical that federal, state, and local leaders do everything they can to promote vaccinations and implement evidence-based safety precautions that will protect the lives and livelihoods of Americans across the country.
NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Congressman Bobby Scott (VA-03) issued the following statement on the Supreme Court’s 5-4 decision against blocking SB8, a state law that effectively bans abortion in Texas: “Women have the right to make decisions about their own bodies and their health care. That has been understood by courts and lawmakers for decades. The Supreme Court failed to block SB8, which clearly violates the precedent set fifty years ago in Roe v. Wade, especially insofar as it makes no exceptions for the life and health of the mother. This law jeopardizes the health and safety of women all over the country, and this ruling opens the door to further abortion restrictions in other states.
