WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman Robert C. "Bobby" Scott (VA-03) joined other Members of Congress on a Congressional Delegation (CODEL) to Johannesburg, South Africa to attend the memorial service for former South African President Nelson Mandela. The memorial service will be held on Tuesday, December 10th. The CODEL departed from Joint Base Andrews, Maryland for South Africa early this morning.Last Thursday, December 5, 2013, Congressman Scott issued the following statement on the passing of Nelson Mandela: "With the passing of Nelson Mandela, the world has lost one of its most unwavering advocates for freedom, democracy, and equality. His life and legacy will always be a source of inspiration for all who seek freedom's embrace. My thoughts and prayers are with the Mandela family and the people of South Africa."

Mr. SCOTT of Virginia. Mr. Speaker, we all agree that child abuse is a horrific problem, and the abuse of Kilah Davenport is a tragedy. We must take appropriate steps to try to prevent such future tragedies.Child abuse is a widespread problem. In 2011, approximately 681,000 children were victims of maltreatment, and approximately 3.3 million children received preventative services from Child Protective Services agencies in the United States.

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman Robert C. "Bobby" Scott (VA-03) announced that nearly three million Virginians have gained access to free preventive care, such as recommended cancer screenings and immunizations, because of the Affordable Care Act. The number includes both individuals with private insurance and seniors enrolled in Medicare."I am pleased to announce that nearly three million Virginians have already received expanded coverage for preventive services under the Affordable Care Act," said Rep. Scott.

The Congressmen helped prepare weekend backpacks for children who do not have reliable access to nutritional meals other than those provided at school. This is part of an ongoing #ServiceRVA effort to encourage more people to give back to the community.
