NORFOLK, Va. — Millions of Americans could soon lose access to discounted internet. Since 2021, the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) has provided discounted internet under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. Those who qualify could receive up to $30 a month on internet service or a one-time discount of up to $100 on a computer or tablet. However, the program is expiring this month.

U.S. Rep. Bobby Scott is bringing back a bill that would expand the Pell Grant to cover short-term training programs. The Bipartisan Workforce Pell Act aims to increase access to workforce training programs such as welding or information technology. Students are currently unable to use the Pell Grant, which is based on financial need, for these kinds of programs “As a result, many adults cannot afford to attend or complete courses that will help them get good-paying jobs and compete in the modern economy,” Scott, D-Newport News, said in an email statement. “This is a disservice to our students, workers and employers.”

CHESAPEAKE, Va. — Rep. Bobby Scott delivered $3 million in federal funds to the City of Chesapeake that will be used to construct the city's first aquatics center. The center will be at the Cuffee Community Center next to Campostella Square Park. On Thursday, August 3, Rep. Scott presented the check with other local leaders, including Mayor Rick West.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Supporting families and educating young children are the main principles of the Head Start Center in Newport News. “We teach them about nutrition, how to work side-by-side with their students at home and outside of the classroom,” Shikee Franklin, the Head Start/Early Head Start director for Hampton Roads Community Action Program, said.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) – Rep. Bobby Scott delivered $760,000 to Newport News Tuesday to help with gun violence prevention. The money will be used to help the city’s Gun Violence and Violent Crime Reduction Initiative, which works to interrupt cycles of gun violence in kids between ages 13 to 24.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Black men in the Newport News community had their chance to share their concerns and vision for the future with Virginia lawmakers on Friday.

Senator Tim Kaine and Congressman Bobby Scott held a roundtable discussion with almost two dozen Black male leaders. A multitude of topics were brought up, including mental health resources, student loan forgiveness, and wealth disparity.

However, those present said the biggest goal was to actually formulate a plan for action.

NORFOLK, Va. — Nearly three years after the COVID-19 pandemic hit Hampton Roads, CHKD leaders say the virus continues to impact the mental health of young people. 

Now, they hope that new federal dollars will help families in need.

“We’ve seen kids who are in distress for a lot of different reasons,” said Dr. Dan Spencer, the associate chief of Psychiatry and Mental Health Services at Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters.

Congressman Bobby Scott answered that call today. He's asking Republican lawmakers in Congress to work with Democrats to pass "critical" police reform legislation.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — Virginia Rep. Bobby Scott hosted a roundtable with school and community leaders over a week since the shooting at Richneck Elementary in Newport News. The roundtable was held at Downing-Gross Cultural Arts Center in Newport News. The congressman invited school safety and child development experts, parents, school leaders, and local officials to be a part of the round table. The conversation focused on holistic and evidence-based steps that can help protect students, educators, and schools.
