WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Bobby Scott (VA-03), a Vice Chair of the House Democratic Gun Violence Prevention Task Force, issued the following statement after the House of Representatives passed H.R. 1808, the Assault Weapons Ban of 2022: “Assault weapons are manufactured for the sole purpose of killing many people quickly. They have been used in mass shootings all over the country. There is no constructive use for these weapons and they should be banned.”

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Bobby Scott (VA-03), the Chairman of the House Committee on Education and Labor, was named this year’s recipient of the Advocacy Award at the 2022 Melwood Ability Awards event. Melwood is a non-profit organization – based in the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia area – that advocates for people with disabilities. Melwood is also one of the largest employers of people with disabilities in the country. “I have spent my career in public service advocating for civil rights, and that includes advocating for people with disabilities,” said Congressman Scott. “Nearly a quarter of the disabled population lives in poverty, which is more than twice its portion of the general population. Access to competitive integrated employment is the key to remedying that.
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Bobby Scott (VA-03) issued the following statement after the House of Representatives passed H.R. 4346, the Creating Helpful Incentives to Produce Semiconductors (CHIPS) and Science Act: “I was proud to vote for the CHIPS and Science Act, which will lower costs for American families and will create good-paying jobs here in America. Only 12 percent of semiconductor chips are currently being manufactured domestically, down from 37 percent in the 1990s, and many foreign competitors are investing heavily to dominate this critical national security industry. The current shortage of semiconductor chips has been a key driver of inflation and led to massive increases in costs of many consumer goods, including automobiles.

Jackson Women’s Health Organization upended 50 years of legal precedent and rolled back the rights of women all over the country. Justice Thomas released a concurring opinion in the Dobbs decision where he made clear that other basic freedoms such as the right to same-sex marriage and the right to use contraception should also be revisited by the Court.

Justice Thomas released a disturbing concurring opinion where he made it clear that the right to marriage equality should also be reversed by the Court. That is why I co-sponsored and voted for the Respect for Marriage Act which would guarantee protections for same-sex marriage which were granted by the Court’s 2015 decision in Obergefell v. Hodges.

In 2018, the Government Accountability Office (GAO) reported that students with disabilities, along with Black students and boys, face disproportionate rates of discipline when compared to their peers. “The guidance the Biden administration issued today will help schools keep students and staff safe.
