WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Bobby Scott (VA-03), the Co-Chair of the Congressional Voting Rights Caucus, issued the following statement after the U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 4, the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act: “The right to vote is the cornerstone of our democracy. Everyone deserves equal access to the ballot box regardless of who they are or where they live. Unfortunately, voting rights are under assault like we have not seen since the Jim Crow era. Fueled by former President Trump’s ‘Big Lie’ and disastrous Supreme Court decisions in Shelby County v. Holder in 2013 and Brnovich v. DNC earlier this year, Republican-controlled state legislatures across the country have pushed extreme voter suppression laws.

Democratic National Committee and Arizona Republican Party v. Democratic National Committee: “Today the Supreme Court approved laws that have a racially discriminatory impact under flawed and tortured legal theories. This will greenlight all kinds of future laws that have discriminatory impact and further erode voting rights. That is why we must enact the For the People Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act to restore the right to vote.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Bobby Scott (VA-03) issued the following statement after the House of Representatives passed S. 475 the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act: “I was very proud to vote today to finally establish Juneteenth as a national holiday and I was pleased to see broad bipartisan support for the legislation. I look forward to President Biden signing it in to law. This vote comes after the Commonwealth of Virginia formally recognized Juneteenth as a holiday last year and now a total of 49 states and Washington, D.C. now celebrate Juneteenth as a state or ceremonial holiday.

Admission Act, which would admit the State of Washington, Douglass Commonwealth as our nation’s 51st state. “Today the House of Representatives once again affirmed that the State of Washington, Douglass Commonwealth should become the 51st state in the Union, finally empowering D.C. residents with voting representation in the U.S. House of Representatives and the United States Senate, and full local self-government. Statehood for D.C. is long overdue for the more than 700,000 disenfranchised American citizens who currently live in the District of Columbia.

However, the Trump Administration has implemented operational changes that have caused egregious mail delays all over the nation.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Tuesday morning, Congressman Bobby Scott met with Post Master Sharon Parker at the Newport News Post Office. The move comes after the United States Postal Service warned states mail-in votes are in jeopardy of disqualification due to lags in service. “It’s not a local problem. It’s a national problem. We need to make sure the national problems don’t filter down to the local. There have been some areas in the 3rd District where mail has been delayed. We understand that it may be temporarily COVID related and they’re working to fix that,” said Congressman Scott.

This visit comes while the Trump Administration has ramped up their efforts to dismantle the current operation of the United States Postal Service (USPS). President Donald Trump has openly admitted to trying to keep resources from the USPS and undermining vote by mail initiatives to help his chances in the November election.
