WASHINGTON, DC – Ranking Member Robert C. “Bobby” Scott (VA-03) released the following statement in response to recent House Republican proposal to undermine public K-12 schools under the guise of parents’ rights. “Politics should never prevent a student from receiving a high-quality education. Regrettably, Republican politicians want to turn classrooms into the epicenter of an extreme culture war while doing nothing to meaningfully help students get back on track.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Black men in the Newport News community had their chance to share their concerns and vision for the future with Virginia lawmakers on Friday.

Senator Tim Kaine and Congressman Bobby Scott held a roundtable discussion with almost two dozen Black male leaders. A multitude of topics were brought up, including mental health resources, student loan forgiveness, and wealth disparity.

However, those present said the biggest goal was to actually formulate a plan for action.

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, House Education and Labor Committee Chairman Robert C. “Bobby” Scott (VA-03) submitted the following remarks in support of H.R. 7780, the Mental Health Matters Act, into the Congressional Record. “I rise today in strong support of the Mental Health Matters Act, led by the gentleman from California, Mr. DeSaulnier. The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated the mental health crisis among students, workers, and families. In 2021, over 44 percent of students experienced persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness; almost 20 percent seriously considered suicide; and 9 percent actually attempted suicide.

NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Congressman Bobby Scott (VA-03) issued the following statement: “Earlier tonight I tested positive for COVID-19 after experiencing very mild COVID-like symptoms. Per CDC guidelines, I will self-isolate and will follow the directives of my doctor. I am grateful to be fully-vaccinated and double boosted. Vaccines are safe, effective and save lives. I encourage everyone to get vaccinated and boosted if they haven’t yet done so. I will continue working remotely on behalf of Virginia’s Third Congressional District.

NEWPORT NEWS – Today, Congressman Bobby Scott (VA-03), Chair of the House Education and Labor Committee, announced $11 million in new federal funding for the Hampton Roads Workforce Council along with Kevin Gallagher, Senior Advisor to U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo, during a tour of the Virginia Career Works Hampton Center. During the tour, Congressman Scott and Mr. Gallagher met with career coaches, job seekers, and employers to discuss how this funding—made possible by the American Rescue Plan Good Jobs Challenge grant—will help workers access higher-paying jobs and ensure employers have access to qualified candidates.

WASHINGTON – Today, in a House Committee on Education and Labor markup, Chairman Bobby Scott (VA-03) led Committee passage of legislation to help address and prevent child hunger by reauthorizing federal child nutrition programs. The Healthy Meals, Healthy Kids Act builds on the Committee’s work to expand school and summer meal programs, increase access to federal nutrition programs like the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC), and prevent and address child hunger. “One of the key lessons reaffirmed by our response to the COVID-19 pandemic is that, when we invest in child nutrition programs, we help reduce child hunger.
