Telephone Town Hall on Government Shutdown, Republican Health Care Crisis
On Wednesday, October 22nd, 2025, Congressman Bobby Scott held a telephone town hall focused on the government shutdown and the Republican health care crisis.
The federal government shut down on October 1st. Republicans control the House, the Senate, and the White House. House Republicans have been on vacation since September 19th. Donald Trump and Republicans in Congress refused to negotiate with Democrats on a bipartisan funding agreement that will fund the government and protect the health care of the American people. Without action by Donald Trump and Congress, many of the Affordable Care Act tax credits that help lower the cost of premiums will expire soon. Over 320,000 Virginians rely on these tax credits to afford their health care and pay their bills. This comes after Republicans cut $1 trillion in Medicaid in their Big Ugly Law. If not addressed or reversed, the Republican Health Care Crisis will cause 15 million people to lose health insurance, and millions more will see increased costs. Many rural health care facilities will be forced to close, including three that have already closed in Virginia.
