Scott to Visit Newport News Post Office Amidst Trump Administration’s Attacks on USPS

August 17, 2020
Press Release

NEWPORT NEWS, VA – On Tuesday, August 18th, Congressman Bobby Scott (VA-03) will visit the Newport News Post Office at 101 25th Street and meet with Post Master Sharon Parker. This visit comes while the Trump Administration has ramped up their efforts to dismantle the current operation of the United States Postal Service (USPS). President Donald Trump has openly admitted to trying to keep resources from the USPS and undermining vote by mail initiatives to help his chances in the November election.

Families, seniors, small businesses, and nonprofits across the nation rely on the USPS for the delivery of medication, essential goods, learning materials, bills and more. Recent delays are unacceptable, especially during a global pandemic when Americans are relying on timely mail delivery for much-needed items, including prescription drugs, tax refunds, economic impact payments and absentee ballots.

In response to the these attacks on the USPS, Speaker Nancy Pelosi has announced the House of Representatives will reconvene this week to address this crisis and vote on the Delivering for America Act, legislation that Congressman Scott has co-sponsored. The Delivering for America Act would prohibit the Postal Service from implementing any changes to the operations or level of service it had in place on January 1, 2020, until the COVID-19 pandemic has ended.  This legislation would maintain current service standards as well as the integrity of our elections and bedrock democratic principles. Additionally, the House of Representatives passed the Heroes Act back in May to further respond to the COVID-19 pandemic and that legislation included $25 billion for USPS. That amount was requested by the USPS Board of Governors, who were all appointed by President Trump.
