Scott Statement on Trump Administration’s Plan to Drain Money from Military to Pay for Border Wall
NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Congressman Bobby Scott (VA-03) issued the following statement after the Trump Administration announced plans to build portions of President Trump’s southern border wall by diverting military construction funds, including by taking funding from multiple projects in Virginia’s Third Congressional District.
“By circumventing Congress, the Trump Administration has made a terrible decision to raid funds for military construction projects to pay for the President’s ineffective and unpopular wall at the southern border. This sets a dangerous precedent and takes money away from our military, including millions of dollars from projects right here in Virginia’s third congressional district. Draining military funds to build an ineffective wall will do nothing to address the root causes of migration to our southern border, will make us less safe and impede military readiness.”
The Trump Administration plans to take away funding from the following military construction projects in Hampton Roads:
- Navy Ships Maintenance Facility in Portsmouth will lose $26,120,000.
- A project to replace a hazardous materials warehouse in Norfolk will lose $18,500,000.
- A project to replace a hazardous materials warehouse in Portsmouth will lose $22,500,000.
- A Cyber Operations Facility at Joint Base Langley-Eustis will lose $10,000,000.
