WASHINGTON, DC – Ranking Member Bobby Scott (VA-03) issued the following statement after the Trump administration’s Department of Homeland Security released a proposed rule to expand grounds for denying legal U.S. residency to immigrants.

“The Trump administration’s ‘public charge’ proposal would force hundreds of thousands of immigrants to make the impossible choice between receiving basic assistance for food and shelter and risk being separated from their families.

“Existing policy ensures that immigrants seeking a new life in America are not penalized for accessing vital services for which they or their children are eligible. By broadening how individuals who use public benefits can be denied U.S. residency, the Trump administration is weaponizing public benefits against immigrant families who need them.”

“This proposal is cruel, counterproductive, and in violation of the basic principles that make America an example for the world.”
