Scott Statement on Release of Alan Gross

Press Release

NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Congressman Robert C. “Bobby” Scott (VA-03) issued the following statement today upon the announcements of the release of American contractor Alan Gross from a Cuban prison where he was held for five years and the restoration of diplomatic relations between the United States and Cuba:

“I am relieved and thankful that Alan Gross has now returned home to his country and family.  There is still much work to be done to encourage Cuba's respect of human rights and the promotion of democracy, but the natural first step in that work is to restore diplomatic relations with Cuba.  Our two nations are separated by a mere 90 miles and the United States is home to millions of people with Cuban heritage.  While our lack of engagement with Cuba may have been warranted during the Cold War, it no longer serves any constructive geopolitical purpose and is not supported by the international community.  It is my hope that the White House will continue to promote our nation's ideals of freedom and open democratic society, and I look forward to eventual normalized relations between the United States and Cuba."
