Scott Statement on Murders of Police Officers

Press Release

NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Congressman Robert C. "Bobby" Scott (VA-03) issued the following statement on the murders of New York Police Officers Rafael Ramos and Wenijian Liu and Tarpon Springs, Florida Police Officer Charles Kondek:

"Saturday, two members of the New York Police Department were targeted, shot at point blank range and murdered while eating lunch in their patrol car.  Sunday, a member of the Tarpon Springs Police Department in Florida was shot, run over, and murdered while approaching a car that was the subject of a noise complaint. The senseless murders of these three men are reprehensible. These officers were targeted because of what they looked like -- law enforcement officers.

"My thoughts and prayers are with the families, friends, and colleagues of Officer Rafael Ramos, Officer Wenjian Liu, and Officer Charles Kondek, all of whom gave their lives to the communities they swore to protect and serve.

"As we gather with family and friends to enjoy the Christmas holiday we should all be thinking about the terrible loss the family members and colleagues of Officers Ramos, Liu, and Kondek must now painfully endure.

"These senseless and inexplicable acts of violence are a painful reminder that we all must work harder on efforts to build trust between law enforcement and our communities. We are all someone's parent, child, and neighbor, and we must strive to see and respect the humanity in each other."
