Scott Statement on House Vote to Halt Trump Administration from Raiding Critical Military Funds for Border Wall
WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Bobby Scott (VA-03) issued the following statement after the House of Representatives passed S.J. Res. 54 to overturn the national emergency declaration President Donald Trump is using to divert military construction funds to build his wall at the southern border:
“Earlier this year, President Trump tried to circumvent Congress and raid funds from critical military construction projects to build his unpopular and ineffective wall at the southern border. These actions would directly impact military readiness and our national security and adversely affect multiple military projects right here in Hampton Roads. It also would drain money for schools and daycare for children of active servicemembers all over the world. Today the House joined the Senate to overturn the President’s unnecessary declaration and to halt his Administration from raiding these important funds.”
The Trump Administration plans to take away funding from the following military construction projects in Hampton Roads:
- Navy Ships Maintenance Facility in Portsmouth will lose $26,120,000.
- A project to replace a hazardous materials warehouse in Norfolk will lose $18,500,000.
- A project to replace a hazardous materials warehouse in Portsmouth will lose $22,500,000.
- Cyber Operations Facility at Joint Base Langley-Eustis will lose $10,000,000.
