WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Bobby Scott (VA-03) issued the following statement after voting for the bipartisan budget deal:

“This two-year budget deal ends the constant uncertainty and dysfunction that is created by short term continuing resolutions. The deal secures billions of dollars in additional investments in programs that are vital to communities all across the country. The agreement fully funds the military, community health centers, and extends the Children’s Health Insurance Program for the next ten years, and it includes robust funding to fight the opioid epidemic and provides relief to areas devastated by hurricanes and wildfires. It will fund additional research at the National Institutes of Health, help provide better care to our veterans, and enhance access to child care and quality higher education.

“Additionally, I am pleased this agreement establishes a joint select committee to address the multiemployer pension crisis.  Many multiemployer pension plans are in severe financial distress, and the retirement security of millions of Americans is in jeopardy through no fault of their own. For years, I have pressed for Congress to address this urgent crisis and protect workers’ hard-earned pensions.

“While this budget deal addresses many critical priorities for our nation, it unfortunately leaves out a permanent solution that adequately addresses the DACA crisis that President Trump created. Now that the threat of shutdown and default have passed, it is time for Congress to get to work. There are many pressing issues that must be addressed including a permanent solution for the DREAMers, protecting workers’ tips, and reforming our criminal justice system. The American people deserve better than this constant dysfunction from the Republican-controlled Congress.”
