November 10, 2020
Press Release

NEWPORT NEWS, VAToday, Congressman Bobby Scott (VA-03) sent a letter to the House Democratic Caucus seeking support for his candidacy to continue his role as chairman of the Committee on Education and Labor in the 117th Congress.

“Governing should be guided by the values and aspirations we share – improving the lives of people from all walks of life. Now, as our nation faces one of the worst economic and public health crises in modern history, achieving this goal has never been more important,” said Chairman Bobby Scott (VA-03). “I appreciate the diversity of opinions in our Caucus and am committed to having discussions with my colleagues in order to find common ground on our priorities for the next Congress.”

In the letter, Chairman Scott notes how, under his leadership, the Committee exercised vigorous oversight of the Trump administration. And during the 116th Congress alone, the Committee held 61 hearings, hosted 14 virtual briefings, reported 19 bills out of Committee, and passed 35 bills through the House.

Dear Democratic Colleague,

This election, Americans made a clear choice: hope over fear, unity over division, and science over fiction. Now, as we prepare for the 117th Congress, I write to seek your support to serve as Chairman of the Committee on Education and Labor.

Governing should be guided by the values and aspirations we share – improving the lives of people from all walks of life. Now, as our nation faces one of the worst economic and public health crises in modern history, achieving this goal has never been more important. Fortunately, over the last two years, we built a strong foundation of legislative solutions to achieve these goals. In the 116th Congress alone, the Committee held 61 hearings, hosted 14 virtual briefings, reported 19 bills out of Committee, and passed 35 bills through the House.

As Chairman, I will continue to work closely with the Caucus and Members of the Committee to build upon the “For the People” agenda and enact legislation that will:

  • Fulfill the promise of equity in education and expand access to opportunity for all students;
  • Protect and expand access to quality, affordable health care;
  • Raise workers’ wages, prevent workplace discrimination, and strengthen workers’ rights to organize and bargain for better wages, benefits, and working conditions.

The Committee will also continue to conduct robust oversight on the impacts of the Trump Administration’s corruption, cover-ups, and incompetent policies and how it hurt Americans.  Over the last two years – through hundreds of letters, meetings, public hearings, and even subpoenas –  the Committee held the Trump Administration accountable for violating ethics laws, concealing cuts to child nutrition programs, misleading students who were defrauded by predatory for-profit colleges, and failing to faithfully implement COVID-19 relief legislation.

I appreciate the diversity of opinions in our Caucus and am committed to having discussions with my colleagues in order to find common ground on our priorities for the next Congress.  I will also continue to work closely with my colleagues to advance their legislation through the Committee, and, where possible, to include their priorities in larger legislative packages.

I hope you will support my candidacy and thank you for your consideration.

Very truly yours,

Robert C. “Bobby” Scott

Member of Congress
