Scott Pushes DOJ on Police Treatment of Lynch, Nazario
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Bobby Scott (VA-03) issued the following statement after speaking with U.S. Associate Attorney General Vanita Gupta:
“Hampton Roads is still shocked by recent events of police-involved violence in our community. That is why I had a conversation yesterday with Associate Attorney General Gupta regarding the investigation of the shooting of Donovon Lynch in Virginia Beach and the disturbing traffic stop of Army Second Lieutenant Caron Nazario. Associate Attorney General Gupta told me that officials at the Department of Justice (DOJ) are monitoring the Commonwealth’s actions and that they are aware of the publicly available discrepancies in the accounts of these events. The DOJ does not usually comment on criminal investigations, or even confirm whether investigations are taking place. But Associate Attorney General Gupta did indicate that the DOJ is aware of the significant public interest in these cases. Associate Attorney General Gupta also mentioned that there is an overwhelming preference for the state to proceed first with any criminal response, because the standards for federal criminal prosecution are significantly more burdensome. This is further proof of why we must enact the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act - these excessive barriers to accountability are eliminated in the House-passed police reform bill. I remain committed to ensuring there is accountability in both these cases.”
Last month, Congressman Scott sent a letter to DOJ asking for a federal investigation into the police conduct and treatment of Donovon Lynch and Army Second Lieutenant Caron Nazario.
