Scott Applauds Enactment of New Laws to Reform Virginia’s Criminal Justice System
NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Congressman Bobby Scott (VA-03) released the following statement after Virginia Governor Ralph Northam signed multiple laws to reform Virginia’s criminal justice system:
“Today, Governor Northam signed into law necessary changes to our criminal justice system that will create more accountability, transparency, and safety in communities across the Commonwealth. I commend the Governor and the General Assembly for taking bold action to pass these long overdue changes.
“In the U.S. House of Representatives, my Democratic colleagues and I passed the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act, which would ban the use of no-knock warrants, chokeholds, and appropriately hold officers accountable for misconduct. This important federal police reform bill is awaiting action in the Senate as Majority Leader McConnell has refused to allow it to be considered for debate on the Senate floor.”
