WASHINGTON, DC - Today, the House of Representatives passed H.R. 3962, the Affordable Health Care for America Act, by a vote of 220-215 (Roll Call No. 887). The legislation will lower health care costs, provide access to care for 36 million Americans, and provide a public option for consumers to help encourage competition among insurers and drive health costs down.
WASHINGTON, DC - Today, the House Judiciary's Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism and Homeland Security held a hearing on "Racial Disparities in the Criminal Justice System." Several leading criminal justice experts including Barry Krisberg, President of the National Council on Crime and Delinquency, Marc Mauer, Executive Director of The Sentencing Project and Wayne McKenzie, Director of the Prosecution and Racial Justice Program at the Vera Institute of Justice testified about the on-going racial disparities that exist in the justice system.

WASHINGTON, DC - Today, Congressman Bobby Scott (VA-03), along with Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers (MI-14) and Representatives Steve Cohen (TN-09), Mel Watt (NC-12), Bill Delahunt (MA-10), Linda Sanchez (CA-39) and Hank Johnson (GA-04), introduced the Civil Access to Justice Act of 2009. The main purpose of this legislation is to reauthorize the Legal Services Corporation Act, which has not been reauthorized by Congress since 1977. A companion bill was introduced by Senator Tom Harkin (IA) earlier this year.

WASHINGTON, DC - Today, the U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 3221, the Student Aid and Fiscal Responsibility Act of 2009 (SAFRA), which makes the single largest investment in Pell grants and student loans in history and provides resources to other education programs. The legislation passed the House by a vote of 253 to 171 (Roll Call No. 719). Representative Robert C. "Bobby" Scott (D-VA-03) voted in favor of the legislation.
